Rock ‘n’ roll at May’s Second Thursday celebration
By Bill DeYoung
Ten years ago, Shawn Scheller was a Tampa Bay singer/songwriter who played bass and sang in an all-cover band, and took the occasional solo gig where he’d pick up an acoustic guitar for his favorite songs, as well as a handful of originals that always went over well.
One evening, in an Ybor City club, a guitarist named Mike MacKewice was in the audience. “I could hear him singing some harmonies to what I was doing,” Scheller recalls, “and I was like, ‘Hey man, why don’t you come up here?’ I could kind of suss out that he was a musician, by his body language and his vocal ability. So I brought him up, and he sang some harmonies with me that night.
“We got to talking, and it turned out that we grew up about three miles from each other up in New York. But never knew each other. So we had this automatic history that pre-dated us knowing each other, and we’ve basically been BFFs from that moment on.”
Chemistry is key when it comes to good rock ‘n’ roll bands, and Save the Radio – playing for The Mahaffey’s Second Thursday on the Plaza party May 14 – was the result of that initial Ybor City alchemy.

Save The Radio is pure rock. Their sound is the kind that fuels you in the final stretch of a 5k, helps you finish out the last hour on a baron highway during a road trip, their sound is the kind of fuel that succeeds where espresso fails in the early morning.
One of their latest singles “Add It Up” peaked at #37 on the Billboard Indicator Charts. They’re often compared to Butch Walker, Seether, Cheap Trick and Foo Fighters for their raw grit and post-punk sensibilities.

St. Petersburg’s WhigFest to debut new beer from JJ Grey, local breweries
There was a point during a December solo performance in Clearwater when someone from the crowd reached out to pass a shot of Maker’s Mark to JJ Grey.
The Jacksonville songwriter missed a lyric on his jook-joint stomper Ybor City and was taking a pause to recover it. Without hesitation, Grey, 47, accepted the spirit, married it to another half shot already in front of him, and sent it all down his throat before launching back into the song.
Grey — with his band Mofro in tow — returns to Pinellas on Saturday to headline the third annual WhigFest Music and Arts Festival, and he’ll be toasting brown liquor again.
